“Automatic car wash” is a broad category. A contact system uses brushes or cloth material as part of its programmed cycle; a touchless system relies on water pressure and cleaning chemistry without that mechanical contact. Both formats still require preparation and vehicle-specific checks.
How a contact automatic wash works
The vehicle enters a fixed bay or tunnel and equipment follows a programmed sequence. Depending on the site, that can include pre-soak, rotating wash material, wheel cleaning, rinse, wax and drying.
Mechanical contact can help move ordinary road film, but the result depends on equipment design, maintenance, the selected programme and the vehicle’s shape.
How a touchless wash works
A touchless system uses sprayed products and pressurised water rather than brushes contacting the body. This removes one form of contact, but it does not mean zero risk or a perfect clean.
Cleaning performance depends on dwell time, chemistry, water pressure, contamination and whether the vehicle has areas the spray cannot reach effectively.

Check the manual before choosing
Some manufacturers give wash-type instructions for particular models, paint finishes or vehicle features. One manufacturer may permit a touchless wash while another provides a specific automatic-wash mode or warns against washing during the first months after paintwork is new.
Do not generalise guidance from another vehicle. Check your own manual, including information about:
- automatic wipers and rain sensors;
- auto-hold, parking brakes and transmission position;
- charging ports and electric systems;
- mirrors, aerials and roof accessories;
- cameras, radar and parking sensors;
- matte paint, wraps and coatings.
“Touchless” is not the same as “hand wash”
A touchless wash is still an automatic process. A hand wash involves attendants or the driver physically washing the vehicle. A self-service pressure bay may also be touch-free until a brush or mitt is used, but it is not usually described as an automatic touchless wash.
Clarify the process with the operator when the distinction matters.
Prepare for either automatic format
Before entering:
- Read the operator’s instructions.
- Close windows, doors, roof and charging port.
- Retract or remove accessories as required.
- Disable automatic features specified by the manual.
- Check trim and body parts are secure.
- Select only a programme suitable for the finish.
After the wash, restore changed settings and confirm that brakes respond normally before returning to traffic.
Which should you choose?
Choose based on the vehicle manual, the equipment available and the contamination you need to remove. A touchless wash may suit a driver avoiding brush contact; a maintained contact system may suit someone prioritising mechanical cleaning of ordinary road film.
Neither label proves quality. If you cannot confirm the wash type or restrictions, ask the operator before paying.
